There are five very harmful chemicals commonly found in store-bought moisturizers that are shown to be extremely detrimental to the health of the human body. In this blog post we're running through the five biggest culprits, as well as giving you a non-toxic facial moisturizer recipe using essential oils that you can make at home! Our recipe is perfect when heading into the cooler fall and winter months due to its highly nourishing, moisturizing and fast-absorbing properties.
Parabens
Parabens are almost everywhere you look in the beauty industry. And for good reason. Parabens are essentially mimicking agents that are used as preservatives in makeup and body care products; their purpose is to stop bacteria, yeast and mold from growing in those products, thus extending their shelf life. But there are downsides to parabens…
Did you know? Parabens are known to mimic estrogen, and are commonly found in breast cancer tissues. There is a suggested link between parabens in personal care products and cancer.
Artificial Colors
Artificial colors are used to imitate natural color, and are typically derived from petroleum and/or coal tar sources. Some artificial colors can be carcinogenic and skin irritants.
Tip! Look for FD&C or D&C on product labels to determine if a product contains synthetic colors.
Fragrance
Fragrance contains a plethora of harmful chemicals and is a bigger offender than many realize. Almost all personal care products contain fragrance. Unfortunately, fragrance has been linked to respiratory and reproductive issues and increases a users chances of experiencing allergic reactions and immunotoxicity.
Phthalates
Phthalates is a group of chemicals that are typically used to increase the malleability of plastics. They are commonly found in nail polish, lotions and hair products. Phthalates have been linked to cancer, endocrine disruption, and more.
Formaldehyde
Formaldehyde is found is many lotions, cosmetics, soaps, deodorants, shampoos and more. It is mainly used as a preservative to protect against bacteria forming. It has been linked to skin irritation, nose and throat cancer and more.
Yikes! Did reading through the side effects of those chemicals make you nervous? We thought so. Here at EOL we’re working hard to bring awareness to natural and holistic alternatives; there really is no reason to be using products that do more harm to your body than good.
Now, if you’re looking at your skincare cupboard feeling overwhelmed at the sheer number of toxic products currently sitting there, we have a recipe that will help get you started on a path to all-natural skincare.
Today, ditch that store-bought facial moisturizer and whip up a batch of this all-natural, toxin-free daily facial moisturizer using only essential oils. Your skin will look and feel better than it ever has before.
Start with 8 tablespoons Jojoba Oil...
Note: We opt for frankincense and helichrysum for their anti-aging properties, and lavender for its soothing and anti-irritation capabilities. Feel free to play around with this recipe and sub in essential oils that are suitable to your skin type (ex. Tea tree oil and lavender oil for acne).
Directions: Combine all oils in an amber glass bottle. One small pump into the palm of your hand should be enough to moisturize your face, neck and chest.
Tip! Rub any excess moisturizer into the backs of hands to help prevent and heal daily sun damage and moisturize the delicate skin there. You’ll thank us in 10 years!
