Linda Jeffries here! As many of you may know, I am one of the co-founders of Essential Oil Labs. This week I'm taking over the blog with a slightly more personal post. I'm sharing how, when and why I use essential oils throughout a typical day. I hope you enjoy this peek at my daily essential oil routine!
I always start off my day with a homemade roller blend of frankincense and sweet orange. While I've never been able to get into the habit of early morning meditation, I do like to take a few moments after rising to get my bearings and think about the day ahead. Typically my alarm will ring, I'll sit up in bed and apply my roller blend to my wrists and the back of my neck. Then I'll practice some deep breathing while thinking through what I have planned for the day and mentally running through a gratitude list - this is a great way to start each day! I find frankincense helps to center me, while sweet orange soothingly refreshes my foggy brain from sleep.
To make my morning roller blend... In an amber glass roller bottle combine 5 drops sweet orange oil with 5 drops frankincense oil. Fill the rest of the roller bottle with a carrier oil of your choosing. I opt for fractionated coconut oil because it is odorless and fast-absorbing.
Tip: Keep your essential oils where you use them! Since I always reach for this blend immediately after waking up, I keep it in a pretty dish on my bedside table.
Essential oils are also a vital part of my morning skincare routine; I rotate through several depending on what my skin needs. One of my favorite tricks is to mix a few beneficial oils in with a dollop of my morning moisturizer, which is free of both fragrance and dyes. To help soothe any flare-ups I add one drop tea tree, and to help smooth fine lines and wrinkles I add one drop each of lavender and frankincense. I often use all three each morning and my skin drinks it right up!
Tip: If applying makeup, give the oil-in-moisturizer combo 20-30 minutes to sink in fully before applying any base products like foundation or powder. I always use this time to have my morning coffee and breakfast.
At EOL HQ our diffusers are rarely turned off! In my personal workspace, I like to combine 2 drops each of lemon, bergamot and frankincense in my diffuser. This blend helps to keep me grounded, motivated and uplifted during morning meetings.
If I'm having a groggy morning, I'll add a drop of lemon oil to a glass of water for a quick boost. This is also a tasty reminder to drink more water throughout the day!
After lunch I often find myself wishing for a nap! To counteract this and aid with digestion I like to add 1-2 drops of peppermint oil to my water bottle and sip on that throughout the next hour.
Tip: If you want to add essential oils to your drinking water, be sure you are using a glass or metal water bottle/container. Essential oils can wear down plastics, and you don't want the chemicals from the plastic leeching into your drinking water!
Almost every afternoon, I switch the oils in my diffuser over to a more earthy blend. I often opt for a blend of basil and mint to help promote clarity. And if I find it difficult to concentrate, I also add in some rosemary.
Try my afternoon diffuser blend... In your diffuser, add 6 drops of basil, 2 drops of peppermint and 3 drops of rosemary essential oils.
Several times a week I like to take a detox bath in the evening. Here's my routine...
Step 1: Add in 2 cups Epsom salts to a hot bath
Step 2: Add in 1 cup baking soda to the hot bath water
Step 3: Add in 3 tablespoons fractionated coconut oil
Step 4: Add in 5-10 drops each lavender and ylang ylang essential oils to calm and relax the mind and body
Tip: Detox baths can make you thirsty! I always keep a cool bottle of water next to the tub to sip on during a detox bath.
For evening skincare, my favorite moisturizing technique is to combine 3 drops of argan oil, 3 drops of rosehip oil, 2 drops of frankincense oil and 2 drops of lavender oil. I add these all to the palm of my hand to warm, and then gently tap it into the facial skin, down the neck and across the shoulders.
To end the day, I typically read for a bit in bed while lavender diffuses in the bedroom. Lavender is so soothing, and makes it easy to drift off to sleep as soon as the lights go out.
I hope you enjoyed reading through my daily essential oil routine! I firmly believe that infusing essential oils into my everyday routine has greatly improved my overall well-being.
Are you overwhelmed by essential oils but want to start incorporating them into your everyday? Start small! You could start by diffusing lavender before bed, using frankincense as an all-natural anti-aging ingredient, or by diffusing peppermint and basil to help stay focused and motivated. The possibilities are endless!
